Frequently asked questions

PCR tests are designed to diagnose individuals with an active infection i.e., those currently infected with SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Unlike antibody-based tests which detect the presence of antibodies produced by the body’s immune system in response to the virus and indicate previous infection, Polymerise Chain Reaction (PCR) tests amplify the trace amount of the virus’s genetic material specifically RNA fragments.

Taking a COVID-19 PCR test is necessary if you have symptoms or require a negative result in advance of travel.

Several countries have mandated Covid-19 PCR test at least 72 hours before travel for international flights, while several others have mandated self-certification by travellers that show they are Covid negative. The Fit to Fly test when produced prior to your flight, or at the Port of Entry (destination) allows you to travel or even be exempted from quarantine upon entering a country in certain cases.

On occasion the testing process can return an unclear result. This is exceptionally uncommon. On any such occasion this occurs we will provide the customer with a free of charge retest at their earliest convenience.  Please contact our customer support team via email at [email protected] and we will arrange to send out a new home sample collection test kit.

The performance of these tests is described by their “sensitivity,” or their ability to identify those with infection with or antibodies to Covid-19  (true positive rate), and their “specificity,” or their ability to identify those without infection with or antibodies to Covid-19 (true negative rate).

The PCR test diagnoses infection with Covid-19 by identifying the presence of the RNA virus using reverse-transcriptase PCR. The assays used at our partner laboratory show a minimum sensitivity of 98% and a specificity of 100%, with no cross-reactivity with other viruses.

The antibody tests currently used by our laboratory are the Abbott test if you opt for venous blood collection by a healthcare professional, or the Siemens test if you opt to collect your blood sample yourself.  For these tests, our laboratory partners report a sensitivity of at least 97.5% and a specificity of at least 99.8%.

Each test kit is CE marked and authorised for use in UKAS accredited laboratories.

We recommend that you place your order well in advance of when you need to collect your sample. First check with your airline to confirm the time required for the test to be valid for departure or arrival. Then work your way back to the date/time of the start of the test window.

Please allow up to 2 business days for the home sample collection kit to be dispatched from our office except at the weekends and bank holidays.

We always recommend you should endeavour to work out when you need to take your test prior to ordering. We are not authorised to advise you of when you should take this

Note that you are required to state the date/time you completed your swab the test. This information needed to complete and print your travel certificate
